Dr Jens M Warnecke is a Senior scientist at EUROIMMUN AG, an international provider of medical laboratory products for the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases, infections and allergies, and for molecular analyses. He is responsible for planning, set-up and conduct of validation studies for newly developed products in the field of infectious diseases. As a Senior Scientist he is responsible for scientific publications in peer reviewed journals and scientific presentations in the field of infectious diseases.

Dr Warnecke received his degree in Biochemistry from the Free University of Berlin in 1993 with a Diploma thesis in experimental oncology. He continued his academic training by investigating the enzymatic mechanisms of catalytic RNA molecules in Berlin and Lübeck and finished his PhD thesis with distinction in 1998. He spent his postdoc time at the private University Witten/Herdecke, investigating RNA-Protein interactions. After a second postdoc with Altana Pharma he was appointed as lecturer for molecular tumour biology in the Master degree course Molecular Life Sciences at the Medical University of Lübeck. With his research group he entered the field of tumour diagnostics, exploring the possibilities and functions of extracellular nucleic acids in body fluids. In 2008 he left academia to work as responsible Project Manager in phase II clinical trials in the field of oncology until end of 2013 before joining EUROIMMUN AG. Jens Warnecke has profound experience as a peer reviewer of scientific journals and is author of many scientific publications. He has a strong background in reviewing and designing pivotal studies.

Celso Cunha has his expertise in biology and pathology of Hepatitis B (HBV) and Hepatitis D (HDV) virus infections. He uses molecular and cellular biology approaches to understand fundamental aspects of virus replication and pathogenesis mechanisms. In the last years he made use of proteomic methodologies to understand the main metabolic pathways affected by replication of HDV. In addition, he has been exploring several in vitro and in vivo systems to detect host cell factors that interact with virus components and may be involved in virus replication. The combination of these approaches may help finding potential targets for a specific therapy which is still lacking, especially in the case of HDV. He leads a small research group with collaborations established in Portugal and several foreign countries. The main research interest concerns the replication of hepatitis B and D viruses with special emphasis on host interaction. He is the co-author of about 40 publications in international journals. Celso Cunha is a member of the editorial board of the World Journal of Virology. In 2001, he was awarded the Ricardo Jorge Prizes of Public Health and Laura Ayres of Microbiology / Communicable Diseases.

Liliana Muschietti is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, University of Buenos Aires (UBA), Argentina and received Ph.D from the same University. She has worked in multiple research projects funded by UBA, National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and Agencia Nacional de Promoción Científica y Tecnológica (ANPCyT). Eugenie Bergogne-Berezin is a Professor of Clinical Microbiology at University Diderot, Paris. She has studied MD in Medicine and PhD in Sciences in the early 1970s. She is a Chief of Department of Clinical Microbiology and research group, University Bichat Claude-Bernard and developed research on Acinetobacter spp., (nosocomial pathogen, pathogenicity, resistance), pharmacology of antibiotics, tissue distribution (lungs, brain, bronchi), research on intestinal ecology, jejunal flora and bacterial adhesion. David Jackson is a Senior Principal Research Fellow with the National Health & Medical Research Council of Australia, a Professor in The University of Melbourne and a Chief Investigator of an NH&MRC Program Grant. In 2014 he was appointed Distinguished Professor in Hokkaido University, Japan.He has trained more than 50 graduate, postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral scholars and published more than 200 original research papers, invited reviews and book chapters in immunology, chemistry, biochemistry and vaccinology. Professor Cláudio Tadeu Daniel-Ribeiro (MD, DSc) is the Head of the Malaria Research Laboratory at the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC) and of the National Reference Center for Malaria at the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz), Full Researcher and Professor at Fiocruz and at the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq); Academician of the Brazilian and French National Academies of Medicine. He is former Director of the IOC (1993-1994), Fiocruz and former Professor (1997-1998) of the Faculté de Médecine Pitié-Salpétrière (Univ. Paris VI) as well as past-President of the International Federation for Tropical Medicine (2012-12016). He received the Sendas Prize (Brazil, 1997) and the Médaille de la Société Française de Médecine Tropicale (France, 2016) and has been named Chevalier des Palmes Académiques (France, 2013) and Doutor Honoris Causa of the Universidade de Nova Lisboa (Portugal, 2016). Valeria Patricia Sülsen is a Researcher of The National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) working at The Institute for Drug Chemistry and Metabolism (IQUIMEFA) – University of Buenos Aires (UBA). She is Assistant Professor at the chair of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, UBA, Argentina and member of the Research Network of Natural Products against Neglected Diseases (ResNet NPND). In 1998, she graduated as a Pharmacist and, in 2009, she obtained the degree of Doctor at the University of Buenos Aires. She was also granted a Post-doctoral Research Fellowship from CONICET (2009-2011). In 2011, she was given the “Félix de Azara” Award to the best work on the flora and fauna of Argentina, which was carried out at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, UBA. Dr. Sülsen also obtained the Award to the best Thesis (Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, UBA) in 2009, and, in 2016, she was given the National Academy of Pharmacy and Biochemistry Annual Award, Thematic Area: Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences- Phytochemistry. Her main expertise areas are Pharmacognosy in general and the study of antiprotozoal natural compounds, being her projects devoted to the search of hits and lead natural compounds, especially sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids to be used for the treatment of Chagas’ disease and leishmaniasis.
